November, Leaving Iraq
by David Grundy

Just beyond the border trench
-- long black gash across the desert

(but why is it so hard to speak?)

Just beyond the well fire's smoke
-- long black slash across the sky

(and why is it so hard to breathe?)

Just beyond the wire of Ali Al Salem, the
miles of shining sand and sky and sea
Are light, and love, and life
And all the dreams
of the floating world --

But why are there tears on my cheeks?
