In One Image of a Child
by Debra Jean Harmes Kurth

Her picture flew . . .
a pin of light, into an away
world, through galaxies,
off man-made stars.

Dark eyes electric,
mystical, change-shifter
in bruised lips on sands
soon to be glass.

in those eyes, whispers
of extinction, alienation,
heavy-handed annihilation
wrapped in innocence
and black cloth.

Madonna child
of stolen laughter,
you are known,
you are seen.
