About the Author
Richard Spilman recently won the New American Press Award in poetry, and his winning chapbook is now available at their site. Years ago, his collection of stories, Hot Fudge, was published by Simon and Schuster and was a New York Times Notable book. He lives and teaches in Wichita, Kansas.
Believe it or not, this poem was written to answer (to my own satisfaction at least) the exact question your website poses, and to put it into the larger context of colonial ventures--and perhaps all forays into other people's territory.
Flies come in by a window
partway open that
allows the cat to roam.
